Biography
My interest in show dogs began in 1986, when my husband talked me into getting a pedigree Bull Terrier. He was not the best show dog, but our association with the Bull Terrier Club and show world in general encouraged us to take up the hobby seriously. We registered Boromir Kennels in 1987 and bred our first litter of Bull Terriers in 1989 and our first litter of Bull Terrier (Miniatures) in 2012.
The follow-on interest in judging began in the early 1990s when I attended some Waikato Branch judges meetings, but it was not until 2003 that I became involved in the judges training system in earnest – again with the Waikato Branch – whose members continue to provide support, encouragement and informative training sessions.
I have my Terrier Championship license and am on the Ribbon and Open Panels. I am also approved by both the Bull Terrier Club of America and the National Bull Terrier Council of Australia to award ‘recognition of merit’ points.
At the administration level, the North Island Bull Terrier Club has been my focus and I have served at all levels since 1990, with just a few years off between. The club honoured me with a life membership in 2007.
We consider ourselves fortunate that our involvement in breeding dogs has enabled us to work with breeders around the world and in New Zealand to improve our stock. We continue to get involved with partnerships and swaps both locally and internationally, as we believe this is the best way to add to our limited gene pool and has been a successful approach so far.
We have stayed with the same breed and to date, over 40 Boromir Bull Terriers have achieved their NZ championship titles, plus a further nine imported dogs and one bought locally. Between them, they have won 47 best in shows and 38 reserve best in shows at Bull Terrier club specialties. In 2012 we bred our first litter of Bull Terrier (Miniature)s, the first of which gained her championship title in 2013.
Our most successful dog to date is Am/Can/Aust/NZ/Mex/Int Ch Boromir Quicksilver, who went to live in America at the end of 2005. He has won best in show at 4 specialties in NZ, plus one in Australia (and two RIS), one All breeds champ show and a Terrier club champ show, as well as attaining his ‘Recognition of Merit’ in three countries.
